COVID & Hair Loss

Nov 16, 2021

Hair is undoubtedly an important part of our identity. If you’ve ever been asked to describe someone else, their hair is probably one of the top physical features you used to illustrate them. We change our hair as a form of self-expression and as a way to keep our personal sense of style fresh. Needing a change? We color our hair or call up our stylist to chop a few inches off! Coco Chanel was famously quoted saying, “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life” but what options do we have when the life shaking event of hair loss is not by our own choice?

We first need to understand why hair loss happens, which can be just as intricate at the many styles we fashion it in. Our hair goes through a four phase cycle: Anagen – the growing phase, catagen – the transition phase, telogen the resting phase, and finally the exogen – the shedding phase. It’s important to know that losing up to around 100 strands of hair per day is completely normal, as that is part of the shedding phase. Many experience thinning hair as we grow older and our hair no longer grows as quickly as it once did. But time isn’t the only factor at play.

One of the newest causes of hair loss we are seeing is in post Covid-19 cases. While everyone’s individual experience with Covid-19 is different, the trauma our bodies go through while experiencing the virus has been linked to triggering telogen effluvium, or TE, causing more of your hair follicles to remain in a resting state rather than a growth state. And Covid-19 isn’t the only culprit when it comes to TE. Think things like stress, changes in hormones, and gaps in our nutrition.

According to Healthline, in some cases of TE, it could take anywhere from one year to 18 months before someone who has experienced this type of hair loss to regain their previous appearance in hair. The good news? TE hair loss is typically not permanent, and there are treatments available.

Here’s how we can help you at H2 Wellness & MedSpa if you’re experiencing tress stress:
HaiRestart – This is a pain free Hair Restoration treatment done with our Fotona laser. The laser targets dormant hair follicles to encourage hair re-growth. We recommend a minimum of 6 treatments every two weeks.
Procell Hair Microchanneling – Using stem cells, the microchanneling process activates your body’s natural regenerative abilities.
Dr. Wilson’s Hair, Skin, & Nails and Ortho Molecular Cosmedix Vitamins – If you’re not getting enough of certain vitamins and nutrients through the foods you’re eating, your hair could benefit from supplementing through these vitamins. We trust Dr. Wilson’s and Otho Molecular because these are pharmaceutical grade high quality supplements you can only find through certified sellers like H2.

During the month of November, you can get all three at a special price! Purchase 5 HaiRestart sessions and receive the 6th one free! You will also receive one Procell Hair Microchanneling for free as well as a bottle of Dr. Wilson’s Hair, Skin & Nails Vitamins.

Of course, also be aware that other medical issues could be why you’re losing your luscious locks. “For those who experience things such as thyroid issues, we need to also be treating the underlying issue, not just the hair loss, or in most cases it will continue to be a problem,” shares Kayse Elaine Freehauf, FNP-C. Her suggestion? Get in to see your health care provider. It’s most likely time for some blood work to rule out, or possibly discover, any other causes for your hair loss. Whatever the reason for your disappearing ‘do, rest assured we have solutions to help you get that growth (and confidence!) back into gear.
